In a fitting conclusion, the Hamilton-Wenham All-Stars captured the 11-Year-Old Division Championship of the first-ever HW Generals Invitational Tournament on Friday by topping Newburyport 6-3 at Cheeseman Field.
The tournament hosted by Hamilton-Wenham Little League, which took place over the last two weeks on various fields within Hamilton-Wenham, included the participation of teams from surrounding towns competing in the 8, 9, 10 and 11-year-old divisions. The 11-Year-Olds were Hamilton-Wenham’s last chance for a title because MASCO won the 8-Year-Old Division, Danvers National won the 9-Year-Old Title and Boxford won the 10-Year-Old Championship.
Hamilton-Wenham Little League decided to host this tournament to provide additional opportunities to play baseball in a tournament format for players across all divisions. “Interest in baseball is at record levels for us, with players wanting to continue playing throughout the summer after the formal Little League season ends in June,” said Augie MacCurrach, a member of the Hamilton-Wenham Little League Board of Directors, who is responsible for the summer programs. “What we more opportunities for as many children as possible to play summer baseball.
The result was a very successful first event, which is due in large part to the commitment of so many volunteers, coaches and families from every participating town who stepped up to make the tournament a great event for all the kids.”
Given the success of this year, next year’s Hamilton-Wenham Generals Invitational should be bigger and better.
